Jolla, the Finnish smartphone startup who released its first handset in its Finland has now expanded availability of the phone to India. India is the second non-European market that Jolla has launched its eponymous debut smartphone into, after adding Hong Kong back in August — via a partnership with the 3 carrier. Elsewhere, it says it has local operator/distribution partners in Finland, Estonia, Kazakhstan and Italy.

Priced at Rs. 16,499 in India (around $270) on Snapdeal, this smartphone sports 4.5-inch IPS qHD(540x960p) display, 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It comes with 16GB storage expandable via microSD card, 8MP Camera and a 2,100mAh battery.

It runs Sailfish OS, which is partially based on MeeGo, the same OS that was last seen on Nokia’s N9 smartphone. In fact, Jolla was founded by a group of ex-Nokia employees who were involved with the development of MeeGo-based devices at the company 😉

About Sailfish OS
It features button-less & gesture-based navigation. Sailfish OS is able to run: Sailfish-native apps; Android apps using built in Sailfish OS compatibility layer the Alien Dalvik from Myriad Group; MeeGo-native apps if its user’s interface is usable under Sailfish interface; in general all Linux apps compiled for Sailfish device or binaries with RPM storage standard, also in console mode or as a non-graphic terminal. All Android software available from the Jolla “harbour” store were tested with a real Jolla device. Android or MeeGo or Linux software can be downloaded from any 3rd party e.g. Google store or any other source, due to Sailfish OS openness policy. From launch, this has given the devices access to a large number of applications, which was estimated above 0.5M unique software pieces at the time of the device launch.
